The Sister Michael Francis Hearon, O.S.U., Scholarship Offered by The Ursuline College Department of English
The English Department of Ursuline College offers the Sister Michael Francis Hearon, O.S.U., Scholarship to recognize and encourage an outstanding incoming full-time, first-year student who has expressed an interest in the English major. The student may apply for renewal of the scholarship each year for a maximum of four years of full-time study as an English major at Ursuline College.
This award is presented annually from the Sister Michael Francis Hearon, O.S.U., Endowed Scholarship Fund, which was established in 1989 by many of the College's English major alumnae with the support of the English Department, other alumnae, and friends. The scholarship is designed as a lasting tribute to Sister Michael Francis Hearon, O.S.U., who retired in 1987 after thirty-three years of service to the College. She is fondly remembered as an extraordinary teacher of English language and literature.
The scholarship will be awarded to a full-time entering first-year student. Applicants must have applied and been admitted to Ursuline College and intend to major in English. Applications are encouraged from students who have no financial need as well as from those who do.
The award will be based on the following criteria: SAT or ACT scores, grade point average, and letters of recommendation from two high school teachers, one of whom was an English teacher of the applicant.
Normally, the annual grant to a Sister Michael Francis Hearon Scholar is $1,000. The grant will be renewed each year for four years provided that the student continues to make satisfactory progress on a full-time basis toward a degree in English. At the direction of the English Department faculty, a grant may be withdrawn following any semester in which such progress is not made.
To apply for the Sister Michael Francis Hearon, O.S.U., Scholarship, an applicant must complete and return this form to Ursuline College, Attention: Department of English Chair, 2550 Lander Road, Pepper Pike, OH 44124-4398. Letters of recommendation from two high school teachers must also be submitted, and one must be from an English teacher who has had the applicant in class.

The application deadline is April 1, and the award recipient will be announced April 15. Adjustments regarding the application deadline can be made by contacting the English Department.
