Ursuline splits final AMC doubleheader at home against Shawnee State

April 30, 2010

PEPPER PIKE, OHIO - The Ursuline College Softball team (11-27) split its final American Mideast Conference doubleheader, taking game two, 4-1, after falling 6-0 in game one to Shawnee State. The Bears who are the No. 1 seed in the AMC postseason tournament, took advantage of four Ursuline errors in game one, but could not manage much against Ciara Seymour in game two.

In the first game, Shawnee State scored a run in the second inning, two in the fourth, another run in fifth, and closed out the scoring with a pair in the seventh. Of the six runs, only two were earned as Ursuline committed four errors in the game.

However, the Arrows battled back to take game two and finish conference play with a victory. Ursuline jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and added single runs in the third and fifth innings.

After a single by Lauren Grana in the first, Hillary Beachy tripled to right, scoring Grana. Beachy eventually came around to score on a RBI-groundout by Miranda Boggs.

In the third inning, Boggs walked and remained on base after a double-play erased Beachy who doubled to lead off the inning. Brittany Mascia's two-out single score Boggs and extended the lead.

In the fifth inning, three-straight two-out singles by Boggs, Seymour and Mascia plated the Arrows fourth and final run.

On the mound, Seymour pitched the complete game for her eighth win of the season. She allowed just three hits and one run, which was unearned in the sixth inning. She struck out three and didn't walk a batter.

Ursuline will return to action on Saturday, May 1 for Senior Day as the Arrows take on Spring Arbor at 1:00 p.m. The team will honor its only senior, Hillary Beachy prior to the game.
