The Master of Arts in Art Therapy and Counseling degree is uniquely designed to provide theoretical foundations and practical skills necessary for a career as a professional counselor, as well as education and training in Art Therapy and Counseling.
The coursework offers exposure to a broad range of theoretical perspectives.
Graduates are prepared to work in a wide variety of clinical, educational, and human service institutions, such as hospitals, children's agencies, mental health centers, schools, correctional and geriatric facilities, developmental centers, hospice, substance abuse agencies, etc.
- The 60-credit hour program that will provide the educational requirements for professional counselor licensure. Graduates with the required 60 semester hours may apply for licensure under paragraph (A)(4) of rule 4757-13-01 of the Ohio Revised Code. The college is currently in the application process for program approval from the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist Board, which will allow graduates to apply under paragraph (A)(3) of rule 4757-13-01 of the Revised Code.
- The 50-credit hour program that meets the education standards of the American Art Therapy Association and the Art Therapy Credentials Board. Students choosing this option may later opt to do the additional coursework necessary to meet the education standards for professional counselor licensure.
- The 62-credit hour program that meets both the Ohio education standards for counselor licensure and the education standards of the American Art Therapy and Counseling Association and the Art Therapy Credentials Board.
Certificate Program
Candidates who possess a Master's degree in a related field may complete a course sequence designed to meet the educational standards for registration and certification as an art therapist.
- Bachelor's degree in Art, Psychology, Behavioral Science, Social Science or a related field
- Evidence of ability to do graduate work as indicated by an undergraduate 3.0 grade point average, based on a 4.0 system
- Minimum of 18 semester hours in studio art to include the following three areas: Drawing, Painting, Clay or Sculpture
- Minimum of 12 semester hours in Psychology to include these four areas: General Psychology, Developmental Psychology (Human Growth & Development, Lifespan Development, or Child and Adolescent Development), Personality or Counseling Theories, Abnormal Psychology or Psychopathology
- Some experience working with people within a human service context
