This Master of Arts Degree in Education, The Master Apprenticeship Program (MAP) for Teachers, offered jointly with east and west side Cleveland schools, is a site-based program designed to lead to both a master's degree and eligibility for state teaching licensure in one year. Intended for the recent college graduate or for those making a career change to education, this full-time, intensive program encompasses 41- 44 semester hours (56 for Special Education) of graduate course work. Students may choose to apply for the Early Childhood, Middle Childhood, Adolescent to Young Adult, Multi-Age Visual Art or Special Education licensure.
Recent and compelling research in the preparation of teachers has identified a consensus of best practices which are hallmarks of successful teaching. This program provides a foundation in understanding what these practices are and how to implement them in conventional as well as more progressive settings.
The program begins with an eight week summer session during which students take foundational courses in education, diversity, human development and curriculum. The apprenticeship portion of the program consists of placement in one or more classrooms where students work with their mentor teacher and students throughout the academic year. Academic work is completed at the school site and on the Ursuline College campus during and after school hours.
Also available in part-time format, the Part-Time Master Apprenticeship Program (PMAP) offers selected coursework available during evenings. The PMAP program will take approximately 2 to 3 years to complete. (The Special Education licensure is available only in the full-time format).
College transcripts are evaluated to ensure that pre-program licensure requirements are met.
