The student learns the components of the risk management process, the design, construction, and implementation of a risk management program.
The specific tasks and management functions of the risk manager are examined and explored.

A study of the health services organization and delivery system, examination of the private for profit and non-profit American health care industry, management decision-making, planning, evaluation and control, current trends and issues, community agencies and consumerism.

Health Care Economics (3)
The health care sector now represents over half of the U.S. economy in terms of economic activity.
Organization-wide re-design, mergers, acquisitions and structural transformations in organizational arrangements of health care providers/systems, creation of new health insurance products, changes in policy initiatives, reimbursements and managed care have all made economic analysis different for the health care versus the private business sector of the U.S. economy.

Legal Aspects of Health Care Administration (3)
A study of the specific laws, federal legislation and other governmental regulations affecting the health services manager.
Specific legal areas covered are intentional tort law, negligence and damages, defense strategies concerning negligence, and probate issues.
This course provides the health care manager with technical legal knowledge and application of strategies in the prevention of litigation for both the manager and the health services organization.
Prerequisite: HCA 350.

Current Topics in Health Services Management(3)
An analysis of salient health services management topics concerning the United States health care industry and its shift from a non-profit service to a for-profit business paradigm.
Ethical issues impacting the management of a health services organization are included.
Prerequisites: HCA 350 or LC 201, HCA 370.

Financial Management of Health Care Institutions (3)
An examination of financial management concepts as they apply to the planning, budgeting, and control aspect of health services organizations.
Financial ratio analysis, cost management, cost variance analysis, cost reimbursement, working capital management, cash, operating and capital budgeting, capital project analysis for financing of health care delivery systems.
Prerequisite: AC 210, 211; MA 125 or BU 375.

Health Care Policy Formation and Implications (3)
An examination of selected health management issues and problems with an emphasis on managerial case studies where decision-making and problem solving techniques are utilized in a group process.
Students are required to conduct, write, and present a research project developing a business plan for a new program/service in a health services organization.
Prerequisites: HCA 350 or LC 201, HCA 360, 370, 402, 430; BU 220, 230, 330; MC 360 senior status with a minimum of 27 hours completed in the major.

Academic Internship (3)
(Required if a student has no professional paid work experience with a health services organization.)
A service work experience in a selected health care organization or institution. Periodic log reports, academic readings and a management project are required.
Prerequisites: minimum of 36 hours in the major and junior status.
