Christine Doman Wynd '74 SJ
After earning her BSN degree from St. John College, Christine A. Wynd,Ph.D., RN, ’74 SJ feels
she came full circle in her new role as dean of the Breen School of Nursing. “Ursuline’s
nursing program has a national reputation of excellence and I am honored to have the chance to
lead the nursing school to even greater heights,” said Wynd.
Strategic planning, assessing current educational programs and establishing future goals are Wynd’s primary responsibilities. Top priorities are to continue to move Breen in a direction of excellence and to instill, in faculty and students, respect and desire for scholarly activity. “Ursuline is unique in its nursing preparation because we provide patient care that has a well-rounded foundation,” said Wynd. “The approach is holistic and considers all factors that can influence the patient’s recovery and care.”
As a child, Wynd dreamed of becoming a military nurse. Years later, that dream became a reality and she spent 30 years serving first in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps and then in the Army Reserves. Wynd credits the military for teaching her how to “lead with grace under pressure.” In addition to her military skills, she brings to Ursuline extensive teaching and research experience.
“In the field of nursing education, one of the biggest challenges we face is that nurse educators are aging and many will retire in the next 5-10 years,” commented Wynd who said their replacements may not be readily available unless salaries are made more competitive with those in other health care arenas. “Our challenge is to continue to work toward higher salaries for nursing educators, recruit new faculty and retain valued, experienced teachers for as long as we can before they move into retirement.”
Wynd is actively involved within The American Association of Colleges of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, the premier nursing honorary society, and has previously served on the Board of Directors of the Greater Cleveland Nurses Association.
Prior to becoming dean, Wynd was nursing program director and professor for The University of Akron’s Ph.D. program. She was employed at the Cleveland Clinic Health System for four years as director of nursing research and then as adjunct staff clinical researcher for an additional six years of voluntary service. Wynd also taught nursing at Case Western Reserve University and The Ohio State University.
Wynd received her master’s of nursing degree from The Ohio State University and a Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University. She and her husband reside in Broadview Heights and have two adult children.
