| Conclusion
 |
As students
began to write their own papers, they reached a number of conclusions
about the project, the primary materials and the experience.
Some students critiqued the earlier writing with a nod to post-modernism
and the critical eye of a peer editor. Others valued the personal
contacts which allowed them to connect with another generation
of student writers as each shared their struggles and successes.
A few students perceived that there were continuities between
themselves and the earlier students; several thought there were
significant differences. The concluding remarks which follow
highlight the thinking and writing of this generation of creative
writers at Ursuline College. |
| "This
interview
[with Sister Michael Francis] . . . was an extremely enriching
experience. We looked at her, much older than we, and realized
that we need to do something with our writings now. We don’t
want to let it slip away only to rediscover it so long from
now. We really believe that meeting her gave us a little wake
up to really do something important with our gift of writing
before its too late.”

"While
some of the writing was genuinely good, others were just extremely
boring and had no real meaning at all. It is hard to judge
the 40's just by looking at the writings, as they give no
indication of anything happening outside of their little world."

"Each
and every time you sit down to write, whatever your background
may be, it offers not only an escape from the outside world,
but a deeper understanding of who you are as a person."

"This
change has affected the writing that has surfaced in the Ursuline
College literary annual, Inscape. It has adjusted from a more
carefree sample of writings to works that reflect the greater
world and the life experiences brought to the college by the
new group of students.
"We
may never have known that these women who shaped what our
college is today had to say about life and the world around
them. The writings that they left behind give us the opportunity
to reflect on our past and understand what we are so that
we as writers can mold the future."

"In
conclusion, it is evident that imagery, art and creative writing
often intertwine, as I have shown in the previous pages. Although
the images and themes of the writing have changed over the
past decades this fact has not, and with the skills of an
artist this connection becomes even more evident and more
understandable."

| "What
I’ve taken away from this project is that while what
student writers write about may drastically change over generations,
the motivations behind the writing does not change at all.
Student writers are all learning to apply an important life
skill, the ability to communicate through the written word."
