Ursuline adds Bachelor of Fine Arts degree
This fall, Ursuline College added a bachelor's degree in fine arts to its lineup of existing undergraduate degrees.
Ursuline's Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Studio Art (BFA) concentrates on six areas: Ceramics, Drawing, Graphic Design, Metals, Painting, and Printmaking.
All studio faculty are working artists with Master of Fine Art degrees, and no class exceeds 15 students.
The Ursuline College Art Department now offers separate degrees in the arts, both of which will include design skills needed for the 21st century. Both the Bachelor of Arts (BA) and the BFA degrees have identical foundation studies and core requirements. The BFA degree is designed to prepare students to enter graduate programs leading to a Master of Fine Arts degree and will cater to the aspiring professional artist.
When a student completes the first two years of the BFA program and finishes foundation studies by passing a portfolio review, that student can declare candidacy in either of the two degrees. Alumni can return and add the needed courses for completion of the BFA degree without repeating the four-year curriculum because the BFA is a separate degree from the BA degree.
"Ursuline's new bachelor of fine arts is unique because it's steeped in liberal arts education and concentrates on studio art or design," said Sister Christine DeVinne, OSU, Ph.D, Ursuline's Dean of Arts and Sciences. According to DeVinne, other schools require students to take a wide variety of courses in different disciplines, but Ursuline gives students a vital liberal arts foundation and allows them to concentrate exactly in studio art or design.
Named one of America's Best Colleges 2006 by U.S. News & World Report Magazine, Ursuline offers over 30 undergraduate and seven graduate majors. Founded by the Ursuline Sisters in 1871, it was the first women's college in Ohio and one of the first in the U.S.
