Summer Science Programs for High School Students
Ursuline College offers three special courses this summer for high school students interested
in careers in math and the sciences:
Science FIRST
TG’s Public Benefit Grant Programs has awarded $47,000 to Ursuline College to initiate “Science FIRST: Focusing Interest in Real-Life Science and Technology.” Offering college credit plus a
$500 tuition scholarship, the program encourage students to choose a college major in math or
the sciences.
Open to high school students in the Class of 2009, the project includes an intensive two-week course, Current Topics in Science: A Global Perspective, taught on the Ursuline campus July 14-17 and 21-24, coupled with a distance-learning component during Fall 2008. Participants will explore the world’s energy options, global water and air quality, as well as global perspectives on infectious disease. Students will return to Ursuline in January 2009 for a day-long session, with an optional research presentation.
The second part of the program is aimed at assisting students with the college application process and providing them with mentoring throughout their first year. Upon successful course completion, participants will receive college credit for their work and $500 tuition scholarship toward the college or university of their choice. Materials and scholarships are provided by TG’s Public Benefit Grant Program.

Summer Pharmacy Camp at UC
The Ursuline College/University of Toledo Pharmacy Partnership will host its first annual
Pharmacy Summer Camp 15-17 June 2008. High school students in the Class of 2009 who are
considering pharmacy are invited to take part in the camp.
The Pharmacy Summer Camp offers students the opportunity to learn more about careers in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences while interacting with other campers, faculty, staff, and community pharmacists. Activities will introduce participants to the pharmacy curriculum and current topics through lab experiences and demonstrations on campus, job shadowing opportunities, and a field trip to a local pharmacy.
The cost of the three-day, two-night camp is $125 and includes all room and meal expenses, scheduled activities and materials, a camp T-shirt, and a camp photo. Students will stay in Ursuline College residence halls with a camp counselor. Need-based financial assistance and transportation are available for students who qualify.

Summer Science Saturdays
The Ursuline College Chemistry Department invites high school students in the Class of 2010 and Class of 2011 to explore chemistry and related fields during Summer 2008. “Summer Science
Saturdays” will be offered on three successive weekends, through activities on the Ursuline
College campus with Antech Diagnostic Lab (12 July), a trip to the Department of Chemistry at
The Ohio State University in Columbus (19 July), and a visit to The Lubrizol Corporation in
Lake County (26 July).
Under the direction of Chemistry Department faculty and college staff, students will participate in indoor and outdoor hands-on activities at Ursuline, tour industrial and academic research labs, and learn about chemistry-related careers. Piloted during Summer 2007, this pre-college experience gives high school students the chance to explore professional opportunities and the coursework that can prepare graduates for them.
For more information, including application and essay materials, visit http://www.ursuline.edu/academics/artsci/summerscience/ or contact Dr. Sarah Preston at spreston@ursuline.edu or 440-684-6073. Review of applications begins on 30 April 2008 and continues until all openings are filled.
