Up, Up and Away: Nursing Students Learn about Flight Nurse Duties, Equipment

October 05, 2016

A group of nursing students completing their critical care rotation at MetroHealth hospital in Cleveland had the opportunity recently for an up-close look at helicopter transportation for critically ill and injured patients.

The students, all pursuing the BSN (bachelor of science in nursing) degree, met with a MetroHealth flight nurse specialist, toured a ground transport unit and examined the equipment required for transporting critically ill patients and trauma-related victims.

“The students had an opportunity to discuss the procedures necessary for these types of transports, learn about triaging patients and managing critically ill patients in a mobile environment, and learn about FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) regulations with regard to flying such as personnel safety and weather concerns,” said Noel Santa, MSN, RN, CCRN, nursing instructor and faculty co-adviser of student nurses.
