The Shadow of Trauma: Nov. 13 workshop for nursing students

October 10, 2017

Because at some point in their career, virtually all nurses will treat patients suffering from trauma, an Ursuline College honors studentpicture of student wearing Ursuline seal on lab coat has organized a free, public workshop for Northeast Ohio nursing students on how to assist in a patient’s road to recovery after a traumatic event.

Titled "The Shadow of Trauma: A Nursing Student's Path," this free, three-hour workshop takes place Monday, November 13, at Ursuline College, 2550 Lander Road in Pepper Pike. The featured speaker will be Kathleen Hackett, MSN, RN, SANE-P, lead nurse for the Pediatric SANE Program at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. Hackett will train and speak to attendees about the need for trauma-informed awareness in everyday practice.

Amanda Henry '18, the Ursuline honors nursing student behind the workshop, was inspired by experiences during her clinical rotations to organize this professional development opportunity.

“Trauma impacts people in varying degrees,” said Henry. “As future nurses, we are key players in ensuring that the next generation of healthcare providers is equipped with a growing, holistic awareness that the experiences of a person's life can drastically affect their health behaviors in the present and that we build a toolbox for tolerance and empathy regardless of the patients we encounter.”

Henry hopes workshop participants will leave informed and empowered to care for patients from all backgrounds without judgement. The workshop will take place in Ursuline’s Daley Dining Hall from 4:00-7:00 pm on Nov. 13. Registration will begin at 3:30 pm. Beverages and snacks will be provided. All attendees will receive a certificate of attendance.

This event is open to the public. RSVP to Henry by Friday, November 10.
