Ursuline College Honors Two Alums with Amadeus Rappe and Crystal Awards
The Ursuline College~St. John College Alumnae Association recently honored Sr. Rosemary Hocevar, O.S.U., Ph.D. with the 2010 Amadeus Rappe Award and Barbara Gibson Gustafson with the 2010 Crystal Award. Established by the Alumnae Association in 1971, the Amadeus Rappe Award is presented to an outstanding graduate of Ursuline or St. John College who has made significant contributions to their religion, profession, home and community. In 1991, the Crystal Award was established and is presented annually to graduates of Ursuline or St. John College who have shown remarkable support, not only to the College, but to the Alumnae Association as well.
Sr. Rosemary (formally known as Sr. Robert Bellarmine, OSU) graduated from Ursuline in 1960. She then started teaching math and science at Sacred Heart and Villa Angela Academies. At Villa Angela, she began her administrative career as an assistant principal and then principal. She continued on to serve in the Diocesan Education Office as the coordinator for Catholic secondary schools.
After receiving her Ph.D. in Educational Administration, Sr. Rosemary began her twenty-year commitment to Ursuline College serving as director of the educational administration program, vice president for institutional advancement and then as a teacher in the educational administration program.
Sr. Rosemary has served on many boards including Ursuline College, the National Catholic Educational Association, Trinity High School, Benedictine, Villa Angela/St. Joseph and University of Young Americans. Her recent awards include the 1996 Crystal Award from Ursuline College, the Villa Angela/St. Joseph Hall of Fame and the Slovenian Woman of the Year Award from the Federation of Slovenian National Homes.
After graduating from St. John College in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science in nursing, Gibson Gustafson earned a Master of Arts in human services from John Carroll University. Her professional nursing career included work at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, University Hospitals, the Veteran’s Administration Hospital, the Cleveland Health Department and the Cleveland Health Education Museum.
Along with her career in nursing, Gibson Gustafson has volunteered time to not only the Ursuline~St. John Alumnae Association, but also numerous other organizations including Cleveland Montessori Association, Iota Psi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, Hospice of Western Reserve and Kappa Gamma Pi. She has served as the Vice Chairperson of the Cuyahoga Community Mental Health & Retardation Board and as the President on the Cleveland Mental Health Association and Women’s Council. In addition, she has provided her services to her parish as a lay and bereavement minister.
Gibson Gustafson has received numerous awards including the Ursuline~St. John College Outstanding Nursing Alumnae Award and Amadeus Rappe Award. She has been the recipient of service awards from the Cleveland Mental Health Association, Cleveland Montessori Association and the Cleveland Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
