Fashion students sew love into dresses for girls

September 05, 2018

When fashion major Laci Gross learned about Dress a Girl Around the World, she found a way to serve others while building herimage of students with dresses design and sewing skills.

Gross and fellow members of the student organization Fashion Focus sewed 10 dresses that Dress a Girl will send to girls in developing countries.

“This seemed like a perfect project for Fashion Focus and for a women-focused college,” Gross said.

The project also speaks to all three tenets of the Ursuline College mission, which is, in short, to educate students for service, leadership and professional excellence.

Dress a Girl Around the World is a campaign under Hope 4 Women International, a nondenominational independent Christian organization based in Forest City, Iowa.

Fashion Department Chair Dr. Constance Korosec, who saw people washing garments in a river on a 2011 mission trip to Malawi, taught students how to sew the dresses with durable French seams so she knows these dresses will last. She also tucked a dollar bill into the pocket of each dress, to help cover shipping costs.
