About the Program
Ursuline College is committed to helping students with learning disabilities (LD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) succeed in their courses and become independent learners.
To help these students achieve success, the College has developed the FOCUS Program, a voluntary, comprehensive, fee-paid program for students with learning disabilities and ADHD.
The goals of the FOCUS Program include providing a smooth transition for college life, helping students learn to apply the most appropriate learning strategies in college courses, and teaching students self-advocacy skills.
Accomodations
Students with documented learning disabilities and ADHD may take advantage of basic academic support services and appropriate accommodations such as the use of high-tech equipment, taped textbooks, and testing accommodations at no additional cost. These basic support services are rights guaranteed to individuals with disabilities under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Admission to FOCUS Program
To be eligible for the FOCUS Program, a student must present documentation of a learning disability, which consists of a Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R), the Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-Educational Battery, and any other standardized measures of achievement.
The psychoeducational evaluation must clearly indicate that the student has a specific learning disability and should have been completed within the last three years for students graduating high school.
For students who have been out of school for a number of years, documentation that is more than three years old will be handled on a case by case basis.
To participate in the FOCUS, students must first meet with the LD specialist to discuss whether the program is suitable for them.
Students must then meet the requirements for clear or conditional admission to Ursuline College by applying to the Admission Office and completing all regular admissions procedures.
