Since completing a research doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health in 1993, Dr. Mary Beth Zeni has focused on access to health. This focus is a continuation of her doctoral studies, including a HRSA funded dissertation which determined the prevalence of chronic conditions among uninsured children from Western Pennsylvanian families living near poverty level but not qualifying for government assistance. The dissertation also included an evaluative research study to ascertain the effectiveness of a care coordination model, leading to an expansion of services to include prescription benefits and behavioral health. Previous positions include Director of Evaluative Research for a state-wide HIV prevention project in Pennsylvania and researcher at Florida Department of Health Bureau of HIV/AIDS. Dr. Zeni has held academic faculty positions at the University of Pittsburgh and Florida State University. Prior to joining Ursuline College faculty in 2012, she was an Ursuline adjunct faculty while a senior nurse researcher at Cleveland Clinic. Current research addresses access to services for people living with substance use disorder. She has published and presented her research nationally and internationally and is the author of an epidemiology textbook published by Jones & Bartlett learning in 2020. Dr. Zeni is also certified in evidence-based practice through the Helene Fuld Trust National Institute for Evidence-based Practice in Nursing & Healthcare at The Ohio State University College of Nursing.
