Notification of Change of Control to Current and Prospective Students

Change of Control Approved in Gannon University–Ursuline College Merger

The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) has approved the Change of Control in the merger between Ursuline College and Gannon University—marking a major milestone in the creation of the largest Catholic higher education system along Lake Erie.

With this approval, Gannon University becomes the sole member of the Ursuline College Corporation, assuming financial responsibility from the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland who have supported this partnership from the start. Ursuline will maintain its current accreditation through the merger process, which is expected to conclude in December 2026, when it will come under Gannon’s Middle States accreditation.

While the institutions continue to operate independently, Gannon provides financial stewardship and operational oversight. The Catholic Diocese of Erie has been named Ursuline’s new religious sponsor, and a nine-member transitional board—chaired by former Ursuline Board Chair Teri Corletzi—now leads the College through this transition.

The intent to explore partnership was first announced in September 2024, when both institutions signed a Letter of Intent. This Change of Control marks one in a series of regulatory steps required ahead of full merger.

Grounded in shared values, complementary missions, and mutual respect, the partnership seeks to strengthen both institutions while honoring their distinct histories and identities.

In the near term, Ursuline’s academic programs, athletics, tuition, and scholarship policies will remain unchanged. Students will also gain access to selected Gannon opportunities, such as Alternative Break Service Trips, with more to come.

Next steps include further regulatory approvals and continued integration where teams from both institutions are actively working to identify effective ways to sustain and enhance educational quality. Ursuline College is committed to keeping its community informed throughout this exciting journey.
