Track and Field Team Wins Second G-MAC Championship.

    March 2, 2015

Ursuline's Track and Field Team Crowned Indoor G-MAC Champs

The Ursuline College track and field team captured the title at the inaugural Great Midwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships which were held at Kenyon College's Toan Athletic Complex on Saturday (Feb. 28).

Ursuline topped the six-team leaderboard with 211.5 points. Cedarville University's middle distance prowess was on full display as it came in as the runner-up with 142 points. Trevecca University (48), Alderson Broaddus University (26), Central State University (17) and Kentucky Wesleyan College (17.5) rounded out the field.

The Arrows cleaned up the awards that were voted upon by the league's coaches. Freshman Tori Abdul was named the G-MAC Freshman of the Year and senior Bea Indurain was tabbed as the G-MAC Track Athlete of the Year. The UC coaches were picked as the conference's Coaching Staff of the Year.

This is the third Great Midwest Athletic Conference title for Ursuline College and the second for the track and field program. Last April, the Arrows won the first-ever Great Midwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship. In November, the soccer team captured the G-MAC title on its home field.

Indurain's impeccable technique and overall skill was showcased in the long jump, triple jump, 60 meter hurdles and 60 meter dash. She won all four events and did so while waiving a number of field attempts after nailing her winning marks early in the competition.

Abdul triumphed in the 400 meter dash by nearly three seconds and turned plenty of heads while anchoring the victorious 4x400 meter relay team. She made up a considerable gap as UC's last runner to complete the come-from-behind victory.

In the field events, freshman Kayla Cool set the school record in the pole vault for the third consecutive week. After clearing 2.90 meters last Friday, she went up and over 3.05 meters on Saturday to take second place. Her classmate Chelsey Seifert tied for fifth after clearing 2.15 meters in her first collegiate attempt.

In the long jump, the Arrows picked up 30 of a possible 31 points. Indurain won with a school record leap of 5.46 meters. She hit five meters on her first attempt and passed in the next two rounds before going 5.46. She passed on her last two attempts after breaking her own school record of 5.31 meters that she set back in early December.

Senior Brittany Kempf took second in the long jump (4.96 meters). It was her best effort of the season, topping the 4.89 meter performance at Youngstown State University three weeks ago. Seifert came in third and her distance of 4.78 meters ranks her fifth in school history. Entering Saturday, her long was 4.78 meters.

Junior Nicole Burlinson (4.74 meters) came in fourth in her first try of the season to add four points to the team score and sophomore Chelsea Rice set a new season-best of 4.63 meters to chip in two points. Sophomore Sarah Rosso came in 11th with her best showing of the season (3.88 meters).

It was much of the same in the triple jump where UC left just two possible points out there, taking 28 of 30. Indurain won when she was measured at 10.52 meters, just shy of her own school record (10.63). Seifert came in second with a 10.12 meter effort which ranks her fourth in program history. Kempf's best triple jump performance of the season (9.97 meters) was good for third on Saturday. Rice cleared 9.81 meters which was .30 meters farther than her previous season-best which came just eight days ago.

In the shot put, sophomore Ali Mowrey (11.07 meters) and senior Tori Berg (10.51 meters) both had their best efforts of 2014-15.

Kempf tied her own school record in the high jump (1.55 meters) which was good for second place and eight points on Saturday. Senior Keyana Roberts went over the bar at 1.50 meters and now ranks fourth in school history. Rosso's effort of 1.45 meters ties her for fifth on UC's all-time list.

On the track, Indurain won the 60 meter hurdles with her time of 8.56 which was just two-hundredths of a second shy of her own school record. Junior Jasmine Lett ran an 8.90 which was good for second on Saturday and also second in UC program history. She was already in second entering the G-MAC Indoor Championships but she shaved .23 off her time. Rice ran a season-best 9.80 in the preliminaries and then took fourth in the finals with a 10-flat.

Indurain was also the quickest in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.82, .02 quicker than the time she turned in at Kent State University last Saturday. Keyana Roberts, who set a new school record with a 7.77 in the prelims, came in second in the finals with a 7.98. Lett's 8.03 was good for fourth at the G-MAC meet and slots her fifth on UC's all-time leaderboard. Junior Adaobi Mgbodille (fifth - 8.15) and Abdul (sixth - 8.17) combined to add three points to UC's score.

Burlinson, an All-American a season ago who has battled injuries this year, came in second in the mile. Her time of 5:11.47 was her best of the season, topping her 5:24.68 from late January at SPIRE. She owns the school record with a 5:07.50 last February. She also took third in the 800 meter run with a 2:20.48 and Seifert ran the fifth best time in program history (2:30.08) in her first time running the race.

In the 400 meter dash, UC took 27 of a possible 31 points. Abdul won it with a 56.99 just seven days after setting the school record with a 56.50. Mgbodille came in second (59.33) and Roberts took third (1:00.35), one spot in front of senior Rachel Cole (1:01.04). Sophomore Alexandria DeVaughn's best time of the season (1:01.96) was good for sixth and junior Diona Roberts ran her best 400 of the season in 1:04.95.

The 200 meter dash at the end of the day just re-iterated UC's dominance. The top seven finishers in the finals were all UC student-athletes. Keyana Roberts won it in 25.99 and then Lett (26.10), Indurain (26.20), Abdul (26.26), Mgbodille (26.38), DeVaughn (27.17) and Cole (27.20) followed.

The 4x400 relay team put on a bow on the day with Abdul sealing the come-from-behind victory when she crossed the finish line at 4:00.02.

Also of note, freshman Jes Hicks, juniors Eadaoin Cronin and Diona Roberts and senior Madgie Dunn teamed together to run a 14:22.01 in the DMR to pick up four team points. Freshman Mary Egan came in 15th in the shot put (8.99 meters).
