Ursuline's business program conducts workshops on leadership and sustainability.

    October 14, 2015

On October 15, Executive Director of Ursuline’s Business programs will present The Shift to a Socially Conscious Economy – how we’re getting from here to there to the Heights Hillcrest Chamber of Commerce.

Brenner will discuss how a shift in the economy is currently underway in terms of financial architecture, rules of business and economic engagement. According to Brenner, a global shift in consciousness is occurring which is bringing about radical changes to our economic infrastructure.

“In the past, we were taught to expect an economy that consisted of endless growth, with businesses solely focused on profit, company growth and shareholder value. But businesses are being forced to confront the realization that we live on a finite planet and endless growth is simply biophysically impossible. This means that the conventional economic tools that worked in the old economy are no longer serving us,” said Brenner.

Attendees of this discussion will learn about how the economy is shifting and how it can impact them personally. They will also discover how they can take part in creating a more just and merciful world, become aware of emerging business trends as well as learn how to best prepare for an uncertain future.

Ursuline will also collaborate with Edwins Leadership and Restaurant Institute on October 19 to present, It’s a New World: Leadership for the 21st Century to students of the Institute.

Ursuline’s Executive Director of the College’s business programs, Nurete Brenner will present the seminar focused on teaching leadership skills necessary to be successful. “Edwins has a unique instructional program for trainees of the institute and we thought we could lend our expertise on leadership to supplement the real-world skills they are learning,” said Brenner.

Brenner will discuss how leadership is about human possibilities. According to Brenner, one of the central requirements for good leadership is the capacity to inspire the people in the group: to move them, encourage them, pull them into the activity and help them get centered, focused and operating at peak capacity. A key element of this capacity is to communicate to people that you believe they matter, that you know they have something important to give. The confidence you have in others will to some degree determine the confidence they have in themselves. “This is an especially important topic for this group as they are re-acclimated into the work environment,” said Brenner.

Attendees of the seminar will learn their own leadership style, discover their talents and gifts and how those shape them as leaders. Discussions will center on integrity and values and how they align with leadership capacities.

Nurete Brenner has a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), an MBA, an MA in English Literature from Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and a BA in English and Middle East history from Bar Ilan University in Israel. Her research interests include inter-faith and inter-ethnic dialogue, management education for Millennials and the intersection of business and peace.

Dr. Brenner has taught courses in Organizational Behavior, Leadership and International Business at CWRU and at the Herzliyya Interdisciplinary Center in Israel and has facilitated Arab-Jewish dialogue groups at the Center for Educational Technology in Tel Aviv.

She is excited about launching the new socially-conscious MBA at Ursuline because she is passionate about graduating thoughtful business leaders who understand holistically how business and society interconnect and that the needs of the community, the environment and future generations must be taken into account when engaging in business.

Ursuline’s business department offers workshops tailored for every workplace environment. For more information contact Bernadette Jaces at 440 684 6084 or bjaces@ursuline.edu.
