$22,843 CAC grant to support events celebrating Ursuline's 50th anniversary in Pepper Pike

    November 21, 2016

Ursuline College will be awarded a $22,843 matching grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture (CAC) to help fund Rooted in Pepper Pike: Ursuline College Celebrates a 50-Year Milestone through Arts & Culture, a year-long series of public cultural events.

A panel of cultural professionals from outside of Northeast Ohio convened in September to review and score Ursuline’s Project Support Grant application. The panel’s score determined the grant amount, which was approved by the CAC Board of Trustees at its Nov. 14 meeting.

“We are enormously grateful that the CAC board members and the arts professionals who reviewed our application saw the value in the cultural offerings we are presenting to the community this year,” said Ursuline President Sister Christine De Vinne, OSU, Ph.D. “We have much to celebrate and we look forward to welcoming old friends and new to our campus.”

Ursuline College was founded in 1871 but moved from Cleveland Heights to its current Pepper Pike campus in 1966. Because the 1966-1967 academic year was Ursuline’s first on this 65-acre campus, the College is celebrating the 50-year milestone with events planned throughout the 2016-2017 academic year. The events to be supported by CAC underscore Ursuline’s commitments to social justice, environmental stewardship, the visual arts and design. They include:

“Letters from Anne and Martin,” a staged reading of writings by Anne Frank and Martin Luther King, Jr. by professional actors from New York’s Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect, USA, on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017, from 2-4pm in Ursuline’s Daley Hall. Co-sponsored by the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage. (RSVP required to Veda.Rawlings@ursuline.edu)

“Designing Ursuline: Midcentury Modern + Beyond in Pepper Pike,” an exhibition in Ursuline’s Wasmer Gallery from March 3 through April 7, 2017. This exhibition will include a public panel discussion at 7pm on March 24 with Plain Dealer Art and Architecture Critic Steven Litt and two of the architects of Ursuline’s buildings, Peter Van Dijk and Jack Bialosky, Jr.

“All Our Relations,” a two-part public art project set for summer 2017 that will involve Northeast Ohio children creating bird sculptures – in recognition of more than 75 species of birds spotted on the Ursuline campus – in free public workshops. Ursuline’s glass instructor will recreate five of these as cast-glass sculptures to be displayed in local businesses. Part II will involve Ursuline community members planting a mandala of saplings on campus in the manner of Welsh artist David Nash’s “Ash Dome.”

“Eastern Edge: A Juried Art Show,” an exhibition of work by artists living in Pepper Pike and adjacent communities on Cuyahoga County’s eastern edge, in Ursuline’s Wasmer Gallery Aug. 25 through Oct. 13, 2017.

“50 Years of Fashion: Samples from the Ursuline Costume Study Collection,” an exhibition in Ursuline’s Wasmer Gallery from Nov. 3 through Dec. 29, 2017. This collection of more than 3,500 garments is used as a study tool in the college’s fashion programs and rarely exhibited in public.

Wasmer Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 12-5pm; Saturday and Sunday, 1:30-4:30pm.

Cuyahoga County residents created CAC in 2006 when they approved a tax to support arts and culture in our community. Since then, CAC has invested more than $140 million to support thousands of enriching arts and culture experiences. Learn more here.
