Students present Innovations '17, a public fashion show April 30

    March 21, 2017

Ursuline College’s students of fashion design and merchandising will present their original creations to the community at the annual Innovations ’17 fashion show on Sunday, April 30, at 1:00 p.m. in the College’s Sister Diana Stano Athletic Center at 2550 Lander Road. The show is open to the public.

Innovations ’17 will feature 50 original designs for women produced by Ursuline students majoring in fashion design and merchandising. The students will present a body of work created over both semesters. The merchandising students learned how to produce a complete fashion show covering every aspect of the fashion show experience.

New this year, students will model jewelry and accessories they designed and fabricated using the College’s new 3D printer. One student, junior Anna Schumm, used the 3D printer to design and create apparel that will be modeled.

In celebration of Ursuline’s 1966 move to its Pepper Pike campus, 50 years ago, the textile concept class incorporated 1960s records (both LPs and 45s) as embellishments to some of their fashion designs. They cut, melted and distorted the vinyl records to create trims and accents to classic black apparel items.

In another nod to the 50th anniversary, Innovations’17 will include apparel donated by Pepper Pike residents to Ursuline’s 3,500-piece Historic Costume Study Collection.

Constance Korosec, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Fashion Program, looks forward to this opportunity to share her students’ creativity. “Every day I teach both traditional and nontraditional students. I tell students to find your passion. When you find your passion you will discover your purpose. Becoming successful will require you to have optimism, enthusiasm, curiosity and intuition. Every day I practice my craft. I am passionate about teaching students. I do what I love and love what I do,” Dr. Korosec said.

Students in Ursuline’s Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising programs prepare for careers in the fashion industry through rigorous course work in design and merchandising, culminating in this senior fashion show. The College’s fashion students have the option of attending New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) during their junior year. They also have hands-on access to the College’s Historic Costume Study Collection that includes more than 3,500 pieces of 20th century American apparel and accessories.

Fashion show admission costs are $15 for adults, $5 for students and no charge for children ten and under. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door only. For more information, call 440 646 8142.

    Students reflect on their designs

“The Collection Retrograde was inspired by the iconic Twiggy, as well as the notorious fashion changes of the 1960s blended with classical chic dress styles for the modern trendsetters.”
    Mia Noce – Cleveland, Ohio

"Storybrooke is a collection based loosely on the fashions seen in ABC's hit T.V. show "Once Upon a Time." Peter Pan and lead character Emma Swan will be featured with design twists of my own."
    Anna Schumm – Findlay, Ohio

“`Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.’ This is a quote I base my life actions on. I want to make simple actions to impact the big world.”
    DeSeanna Morgan – Cleveland, Ohio

“The collection features vibrant color and natural movement to highlight the everyday woman on the go.”
    Kahtrina Reddick – Cleveland, Ohio

“With spring in mind, these two collections feature floral and geometric prints that will flatter any woman.”
    Paloma DeFreeze – Cleveland, Ohio

“I am inspired by fabric and designs that speak volumes, expressing a sense of heightened style consciousness. This collection is one of versatility, featuring apparel to be worn in all seasons, as well as apparel for children and adults. My customer is one who does not follow trends but creates their own!”
    Tiffany Harris – Cleveland, Ohio
