Fashion student prepares for year at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology

    July 11, 2017

New York City is one of the top fashion cities in the world, with Fashion Week, the famous Garment District, and designers like Ralph Lauren and Vera Wang. Starting this fall, New York City will also be home to Ursuline College fashion merchandising major Mia Noce, who will spend the academic year in the Visiting Student Program at Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) studying fashion management.

“I’m so excited about this,” Noce said after learning of her acceptance into the competitive program. She said she plans to immerse herself in all things fashion, including her classes at FIT, guest lectures by famous designers, the city’s huge variety of fabric stores, and any practical work experience she can land.

“Ms. Noce is an outstanding fashion merchandising student here at the home institution of Ursuline College,” said Department Chair Constance Korosec, Ph.D. “FIT is very selective. Students must have a high GPA and recommendation from the home institution Chair.”

Korosec, known to her students as Dr. K., extended her congratulations to Noce and to the fashion faculty members who prepared her, including Susan (Burrows) Powers ’07, MA’08; Anne-Marie Gurko ’09, MA’16; Jennifer (Brenner) Knaus ’96; and May (Cygan) Beard ’92, MA ’92. Both Knaus and Beard are Ursuline alumnae who studied at FIT.

Noce learned to sew at Beaumont School, the high school for girls which is sponsored by the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland. She went on to Kent State University, which has a large fashion program. But after a semester there, she transferred to Ursuline.

    Why the switch?

“Kent was very big. I had to take a bus from the parking lot to the classroom,” Noce recalled. “I just thought having one-on-one attention from the teachers would help improve my skills. Ursuline is all about helping you get to where you want to go and I feel like they actually care about you and take that time with each individual student. You don’t necessarily get that at a big university. At Ursuline you even build a relationship with your counselor. I have a great relationship with Dr. K. She’s helped me every step of the way.”

The opportunity to spend a semester at FIT was also a big draw for Noce. “I’m hoping that New York will help me determine my path.”
She already knows she loves to draft patterns, is interested in textiles and is passionate about eco- and social-justice issues. At Ursuline, Noce is combining her fashion merchandising major with a fashion design minor. She will graduate with a bachelor’s degree from Ursuline and an associate’s degree from FIT.

As she wrote in her application to the FIT program, “I knew the best way to express my fashion creativity while also having a wide range of career options was through fashion business management.”

Asked if she feels ready for the big city, Noce doesn’t hesitate. “Definitely way more ready than I was at 18.”
