Ursuline grad Denise San Antonio Zeman presents to students as first in “Stars Among Us” series

    November 16, 2017

In celebration of Founder’s Week, Ursuline alumna Denise San Antonio Zeman came to campus Nov. 13 to speak with student leaders about women in leadership. Zeman, the former executive director of Cleveland’s Saint Luke’s Foundation, was the inaugural speaker in Ursuline’s new “Stars Among Us” series.

“We started this series so that our students could hear from and interact with high achieving women in our Northeast Ohio community,” said Ursuline President Sister Christine De Vinne, OSU, Ph.D. “I’m delighted that Denise San Antonio Zeman was the first speaker in the series. She embodies so much of what we strive for in educating students for service, leadership and professional excellence.”

San Antonio Zeman urged students to develop “tools in self advocacy” and try to learn from their mistakes. “With distance and time, mistakes are your best teachers,” she said. She urged students to remain open to learning, well beyond the years of their formal education. “The people in my life who have been the most interesting have been life-long learners,” she said.

In addition to sharing her insights, San Antonio Zeman gave each student a copy of the book “Leap of Reason: Managing to Outcomes in an Era of Scarcity,” by Mario Morino.

Ursuline celebrates Founder’s Week annually in commemoration of the founding of the college by Mother Mary of the Annunciation Beaumont on Nov. 17, 1871.

Also addressing students as part of Founder’s Week was Channel 3 WKYC reporter Tiffany Tarpley, who spoke about women in leadership, her own career path, and how women can uplift and inspire one another.

Students also had opportunities to view and discuss the movie “Dayla’s Other Country,” about the experiences of a 12- year-old immigrant girl and her mother; and “Makers,” a documentary series examining how women have helped shape America over the past 150 years, striving for a full and fair share of political power and economic opportunity.
