The Midwest Nursing Research Society (MNRS) has awarded Cleveland Clinic and Ursuline College’s Breen School of Nursing its 2019 Outstanding Partnership Award. This award is based on long-standing collaboration between the hospital system and the College on initiatives that improve nursing education and practice.
“The partnership between the Breen School of Nursing and Cleveland Clinic has been sustained for nearly two decades,” said Patricia A. Sharpnack, DNP, RN, dean and Strawbridge Professor. “The research and operationalizing of quality projects has been robust and has afforded the College and Cleveland Clinic nursing leaders opportunities to learn from each other, be on the cutting edge of preparing students for transition to practice, and improve healthcare outcomes.”
Cleveland Clinic’s Associate Chief Nursing Officer Joan Kavanagh, PhDc, MSN, RN, said in the award application, “From the perspective of the Cleveland Clinic, The Deans Roundtable Collaboration, of which Ursuline College is a primary contributor, has led to improved communication, strong partnerships, and the development of innovative approaches to clinical education in the academic and clinical settings.”
The Midwest Nursing Research Society cited more than 13 different professional collaborations between the two institutions, including efforts to increase the number of nurses who have earned the bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree, and training by Breen School of Nursing faculty for new hires at the Clinic in the TeamSTEPPS approach to working cooperatively with other healthcare providers.
In addition to these projects, faculty and staff of the two institutions have worked together on doctor of nursing practice (DNP) scholarly projects, preceptorships for undergraduate and graduate nursing students, and opportunities for Cleveland Clinic staff to be mentored as educators or in the completion of their academic degrees by Ursuline College faculty. Ursuline’s Breen School of Nursing is ranked #2 in Ohio and in the top 10% of nursing schools nationally by College Factual.
The award will be presented to representatives of both institutions at the MNRS Conference on March 30 in Kansas City, Missouri.
