On Monday, March 15, 2021, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in the Catholic Church issued a statement that priests are not permitted to bless same-sex unions. This was a restatement of Church teaching.
Although not new, this teaching can reinforce a perception that members of the LGBTQ+ community are not welcome in the Catholic Church; however, there is a greater reality. Pope Francis himself has spoken of the respect and sensitivity that should be accorded the LGBTQ+ community. His pastoral approach is critical.
At Ursuline College, we welcome members of this community and value their presence. Our mission calls us to transform students for service and leadership with attention to the value of diversity. As we strive to live this mission, may we foster open conversations and a welcoming spirit to all members of our campus community.
