The most popular T-shirt in the Ursuline College bookstore declares, “Ursuline Football. Still Undefeated.” The historically women’s college with 11 NCAA Division II athletic programs hopes to turn the legend into reality come Spring 2026.
The Ursuline College Athletic Department announced today the addition of women’s flag football to its intercollegiate athletic programs. Ursuline is the first four-year institution of higher learning in Ohio to be home to an intercollegiate women’s flag football team.
Flag football is becoming one of the fastest growing high school sports for girls. Created by high school football coaches to teach basic football skills to youth in a fun, positive, professional environment, Northeast Ohio Flag Football Incorporated, alongside the Cleveland Browns, has grown the sport to field 51 teams in the areas surrounding Ursuline’s home in Pepper Pike, Ohio.
The College will conduct a search for a head flag football coach this fall so it can begin the recruiting and team building process. Players will be on campus starting in Fall 2025 with the team being ready for competition for the Spring 2026 season. The addition of flag football brings Ursuline to 12 athletic programs, 11 of which compete in NCAA DII.
“As a women’s focused institution, we are extremely proud to be the first institution in the state of Ohio to provide this opportunity to young women looking to further their athletic careers in the sport of flag football” said Athletic Director, Cindy McKnight. “We are excited to foster the growth of this emerging sport and to enhance our student-athlete experience by adding to our diverse offering of athletics programs. We look forward to seeing additional institutions across the country follow suit.”
