Ursuline College has a new board chair at its helm for the first time in more than a decade. With a unanimous vote at its regular December 5 meeting, the Board of Trustees named alumna Teri Herrmann Corletzi to succeed John M. “Jack” Newman, Jr. as chair.
Corletzi previously served as vice chair. She recently headed the College’s presidential search committee and continues to play an integral role along with Newman in the College’s strategic partnership with Gannon University.
“I've been contemplating stepping down for a while,” explains Newman who has served beside three presidents in his 14 years as chair. “However, I wanted to ensure a smooth transition for the new president.” David King, EdD was installed last month as the College’s 18th president.
“Each day, I’m more impressed with and grateful for Dr. King, his leadership, and the wonderful working relationship that Teri and I have developed with him,” he continues. “As we formalize our partnership with Gannon through the upcoming Definitive Agreement and begin executing it, I felt it was important that alumnae see themselves more fully represented in our governance. Teri’s dedication and knowledge make her the ideal candidate to ensure the continuation of Ursuline’s identity and future with Gannon.”
“I never imaged as a student here that I would have the honor to serve in this capacity,” states Corletzi. “I’m a truly humbled and deeply appreciate having had Jack as a mentor. I’m thrilled he will continue to serve the College as a trustee.” Newman has been member of the board for almost 30 years and received the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges (OFIC) 2024 Earl F. Morris Trustee Award.
During Newman’s tenure, the College has undergone several major construction projects including renovation of Dauby Science Center, with 10 labs and expanded classroom space, as well as the creation of the Besse Library Learning Commons, now home to key academic support services. Ursuline also added an Exercise Science major at the undergraduate level and the Physician Assistant and Nurse Anesthesia programs at the graduate level to increase revenue by offering new in-demand degrees to support the needs of Northeast Ohio and beyond.
Dr. King notes, “Jack’s love of Ursuline College is unmatched. He is a true inspiration. I look forward to continuing his legacy of achievement with Teri.”
Corletzi becomes chair effective immediately. After graduating from Ursuline with an undergraduate degree in business, she earned a master’s degree in education from Cleveland State University. A former Ursuline College Alumnae Association president, she has served on the Board of Trustees since 2008. She and her husband Edward live in Chagrin Falls with their teenage son.
