First of its kind in Ohio
Ursuline College’s Breen School of Nursing and Health Professions announces a new, first-of-its-kind in Ohio, post-graduate certificate program: the Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP). This 15-credit program equips certified Family Nurse Practitioners with specialized knowledge and procedural expertise to excel in urgent and emergent care settings.
“According to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Emergency Nurse Practitioners see on average 22 patients per day,” notes Janet Baker, DNP, associate dean of Graduate Nursing Education. “In a typical 12-hour shift, an ENP can make 22 different diagnosis, 22 different treatment plans, and often prescribes 22 different drugs. Their cases are more diverse than in any other healthcare setting.”
She continues, “In just five classes, this program provides nurse clinicians with enhanced learning in assessment, stabilization, and management of these diverse emergency conditions to prevent complications and optimize patient outcomes.
“They are better prepared to provide comprehensive care to patients of all ages, including those with acute and life-threatening conditions, that require rapid decision-making and complex interventions,” explains Baker.
Patricia Sharpnack, DNP, RN, CNE, NEA-BC, ANEF, FAAN, dean of Ursuline College’s Breen School of Nursing and Health Professions, adds “This new program demonstrates Ursuline’s commitment to find more ways to improve the health and wellbeing of Northeast Ohio and beyond.
Emergency nurse practitioners, who serve as a safety net for vulnerable populations, are in high demand with a median total annual income of $130,000 or more.”
Applications are being accepted for the fall of 2025 for this new online program. Ursuline College is a National League of Nursing Center of Excellence and its master’s nursing programs are ranked 34th nationwide and 3rd in Ohio by US News and World Report’s Best Graduate Schools.
