Ursuline’s History and Civic Engagement bachelor's degree program will prepare you to understand the past with a critical eye toward the present and future. You'll develop the perspective, research abilities, and thinking skills that employers say they want and that our society needs. Through a focus on social justice, civil rights and various reform movements, you will learn about the importance of engaging in civil society.
The Civic Engagement component of this major – infused throughout your courses – connects the classroom to the outside world. Through an internship, community-based research, or volunteering, you’ll engage with the local community, applying what you’ve learned to real social or economic needs. In the process, you’ll gain new insight into the workings of government, nonprofit organizations, or companies.
Your learning experience in History and Civic Engagement will be shaped by your goals. Participating in faculty-led trips abroad, attending public lectures, double majoring, or enrolling in one of our graduate bridge programs will enrich your experience even further.
History and Civic Engagement Professor Pamela McVay, PhD, has her students create digital exhibitions that incorporate video, sound, still images, text and multiple links to online resources for a deep dive into compelling subjects.
The most common careers for graduates with the B.A. in History and Civic Engagement are in the public sector (government service, non-profits, non-governmental organizations, policy studies organizations). History graduates are also well prepared for careers that require the ability to work in groups, apply critical thinking, solve research problems, and communicate well in speech and writing.
Students who complete the program and do well in their classes are prepared for graduate study in history, political science, historic preservation, law and museum studies. Students who intend to enter graduate study in history should include relevant foreign language training in their undergraduate programs and should consider taking at least one course in statistics.
Students interested in a career in law should consider participating in our Pre-Law advising program and should look into our direct admission agreements with Cleveland State University College of Law and Catholic University's Columbus School of Law in Washington, D.C.
The History and Civic Engagement major also pairs well with Ursuline’s new 4+1 approach to teacher preparation. On this pathway, you would major in History and Civic Engagement and take certain Education courses in your four undergraduate years. Then you’d spend a fifth year earning a master’s degree in education and preparing for certification and a career as a history teacher.
