English Bachelor's Degree Program Haleigh Platt

    Graphic Design major, English minor

An education in English or the humanities at Ursuline is beneficial no matter what career path you follow after graduating.

    Haleigh Platt

    What made you choose Ursuline?

I knew from a very young age I wanted to attend Ursuline because my sister attended here as well. The atmosphere was perfect for me in terms of class size and allowed me to develop close relationships with students, faculty, and staff. I felt like my opinions and passions were recognized here and that’s something I value deeply.

What did you like best about the English program at Ursuline?

First and foremost, I wish I had majored in English! With that said, the minor was wonderful, and I feel like I developed skills I desired as someone who loves literature and analyzing books. I enjoyed all my English courses and my passion for reading grew immensely. My professors worked tirelessly to bring me the best learning experience possible and they made every subject interesting and worthwhile. The faculty running the department truly made my four years at Ursuline amazing and fun!

How many years were you an editor for Inscape, our fine arts annual?

I was an editor for Inscape for three years and the editor-in-chief for two of those years. I gained a lot of respect for the editing process - it is very intense and requires so much attention and skill. I gained the knowledge to combine design and editorial skills into something beautiful and inspiring for the community. Anyone who knows me knows that I would much rather follow than lead but being given the opportunity to lead was very eye opening and it helped shape my character while attending Ursuline.

You had a job lined up before graduation. What are you doing and how did your Ursuline education help?

I am currently working two jobs. I am working as a financial assistant and doing graphic design work for a small family-owned business. Ursuline helped me develop the capacity to think very broadly while also being able to focus on details which is very important in both of my jobs. I can use the left and right sides of my brain every day and I think my education really aided in being able to comfortably transition back and forth with ease. Ursuline helped me gain confidence to share my skills with the world and do so without wavering.

What would you say to encourage a student considering majoring or minoring in English at Ursuline?

If you have even the slightest interest in English, I highly recommend the English program. You will gain new passions or increase existing ones. An education in English or the humanities at Ursuline is beneficial no matter what career path you follow after graduating. The English department staff/faculty are the most hardworking and kind people I’ve ever met. We are more than just professors and students; we are a family! Once you graduate, the professors are still available for assistance and are more than happy to guide us, which I appreciate very much.
