St. Nicholas Day Wish List
As you may know, the feast day of St. Nicholas is December 6, a time when the Church remembers this 4th-century Greek bishop known for his compassion and generosity. Over the centuries, parents in many European countries have commemorated St. Nicholas by placing candies or cookies in the shoes of their children on the night before his feast day.
Our needs at Ursuline go a little beyond candies and cookies, although we gratefully welcome gifts in any size. Please have a look at our St. Nicholas Day Wish List and consider donating to one of these special efforts.
Emergency Fund: Ursuline College students sometimes face relatively minor economic hardships that threaten their ability to remain enrolled. For instance, inability to pay a $350 car repair bill can lead a student to drop out. In situations such as this, students can turn to the College’s Emergency Fund. Overseen by the Office of Student Affairs, this fund comes with strict guidelines to prevent misuse and reminds us of our call to compassion.
Softball Travel Fund: Softball is a spring sport and spring always seems to arrive slowly and begrudgingly in Northeast Ohio. For this reason, the Ursuline Arrows softball team travels to southern states to compete, typically racking up 8,000 miles or more per season. The Softball Travel Fund helps cover these extraordinary travel expenses so they may represent the College – even in March.
First Impressions: The College’s bronze statue of St. Angela, foundress of the Ursuline Sisters, creates a first impression of the College for every new visitor entering our Mullen Building. Over the decades, the landscaping surrounding our beautiful statue has aged and now looks tired and weather beaten. In time for the College’s 150th anniversary in 2021, we hope to rejuvenate this area into a garden that makes a truly welcoming first impression on all visitors.
Say Amen Scholarships: Earlier this year, Ursuline joined the Say Yes to Education Compact, pledging to enable five Cleveland public high school graduates to attend Ursuline without charge. Because these scholarships are not available to students of Cleveland’s Catholic high schools, we also created Say Amen to College scholarships, specifically for students of six Catholic high schools. We share with these high schools a belief that Catholic education can transform students’ lives.
Annual Fund: Perhaps you would prefer to give to Ursuline College’s Annual Fund, which supports the College’s operating expenses, from faculty salaries, to technology, to utilities and campus maintenance. Your gift to the Annual Fund will help us keep the lights burning for St. Nick!
