Melissa Barranger Mathys completed her undergraduate work at the University of Akron and her Ph.D. at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. At Ursuline she teaches Principles of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Most recently she was chosen to be the college mentor of the National Chemistry Olympiad team. This team consists of four of the brightest high school students and a team of three mentors. In July of each year, this team competes with 76 other countries for the gold in chemistry. She joined the Ursuline faculty after spending 13 years teaching chemistry and biochemistry at Mercyhurst College.
