Learning about trauma is important for anyone who will be working with other people, and especially for helping professionals. This includes anyone who...
- is interested in pursuing a helping profession: nursing and medical care, social work, psychology, art therapy, counseling, education
- is curious about how trauma impacts the human brain and body
- wants to learn how to prioritize their own care and well-being, and prevent burnout and compassion fatigue
- wants to build trauma- responsive policies and practices in their current and future workplace
Trauma exposure is widespread, with estimates suggesting over 2/3 of adults have experienced at least one traumatic experience in their lifetime. It can have lifelong effects on a person’s brain and body, impacting their interpersonal relationships, emotion regulation, physical health, and sense of safety and trust.
Understanding the effects of trauma will prepare students to work in a variety of human service sectors, including medical care, education, counseling and therapy, social services, and human resources, among others.
