Biology Department Lab Coordinator

Summary
This position is responsible for the operation of the biology laboratory. This is a 10-month position, plus limited summer hours. Reports to the Chair of the Biology Department.
Responsibilities
I. Laboratory Tasks (including bioculture and preparation of materials)
· Develop, monitor, and maintain inventory of materials, disposables and equipment;
· Maintain chemical inventory and SDS documentation as necessary;
· Maintain plant and animal histology slide library.
· Maintain living plant collection and other organisms for laboratory exercises including subculturing, cleaning cages and other habitats.
· Coordinate schedules and material needs with individual instructors/courses;
· Order materials, prepare supplies and equipment; mix reagents and solutions; and prepare media and equipment each week for each lab sections;
· Clean and restock laboratories spaces as needed (prior to and following classes).
II. Administrative Tasks (including bookkeeping)
· Inform the department chair when any equipment needs to be repaired or replaced.
· Write and place orders for supplies and materials;
· Review invoices and packing slips; (contacting vendors if corrections are necessary and forwarding invoices to the department chair for approval).
· Assign tasks, monitor progress and completion, and maintain time records for work study students;
· Participate in department budget preparation and monthly audit with College’s general ledger;
· Reconcile department credit card statement(s);
· Monitor compliance with safety protocols and documentation;
· Perform other duties as assigned or directed.
Qualifications
Broad specialized training in biology or related STEM field equivalent to two years of college. Bachelor’s Degree in biology or related STEM field preferred, including 2 years of laboratory experience in related work areas. Higher education experience preferred, including working with students. Srong verbal, written and interpersonal skills, including demonstrated experience working in an inclusive environment; excellent organizational skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize workload.
This position requires full use of hands for manipulation of living organisms and operation of instruments and apparatus. Also, materials and/or apparatus may need to be transported from one location to another during the course of the day/week/term.
