The bachelor’s program at Ursuline College is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Initial accreditation at the baccalaureate level of social work education was received from the Council on Social Work Education on June 19, 1995, retroactive to the graduating class of 1994. This accreditation at the baccalaureate level was reaffirmed in June 2023, see CSWE Accredited Social Work Programs. The on-line program option was approved after submission of a Notification of Program Change Report to CSWE in 2017. Classes for the on-line program option were initiated in Fall, 2018.
The Social Work Program curriculum for the bachelor’s degree meets the educational requirements for professional licensure (or certification/registration) in those states that regulate bachelor level social work professionals. Some state boards only regulate social work practice based on the master’s degree level of professional practice. Based on information from the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) website retrieved on 7/15/20, the following States do not regulate/license social work practice at the bachelor’s level: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington.
Licensing of social work practitioners is under the authority of a designated office in each individual state. Most states require a minimum of a BSW to work as a social worker. Most states also require that a social worker sitting for a licensing exam be a graduate of a CSWE-accredited program. Contact information for individual state licensing boards can be found on the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) website at www.aswb.org or through an internet search for a licensing board for a particular state. A report of licensing requirements by state can be generated through this link at the ASWB website: Licensing requirements by state or province..
The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) is the association of boards that regulate social work. ASWB develops and maintains the social work licensing examination used across the country and is a central resource for information on the legal regulation of social work. Through the association, social work boards can share information and work together. ASWB also is available to help individual social workers and social work students with questions they may have about licensing and the social work examinations.
