Fundamentals of Coaching provides an overview of the concepts that are essential in the preparation of secondary school and/or collegiate sport coaches. Participants will evaluate current theoretical perspectives in the field of coaching surrounding mental and physical preparation and will critically evaluate the current research in athletics coaching. Participants will develop and or thoroughly evaluate a personal coaching philosophy, evaluate theories in motivation, understand team dynamics, evaluate staffing needs, understand the financial aspects of budgeting, learn strategies for communicating effectively and improving physical and mental player performance.

Focus on organizing and managing your team. Coaches will explore best practices in team travel, practices, scheduling, team expectations, discipline, dealing with parents, working with administrators and building community and institutional relationships.

Coaching and Governance will focus on collegiate level coaching and the administrative duties of and responsibilities of college coaches related to rules, regulations and governing bodies of sport. The course will specifically address the compliance issues for all athletics governing bodies, how to build a program that is compliant and how and when to educate athletes, fans and staff on all regulations that effect on-field play, athletics participation and personal conduct within each division, level and organization.
