This course covers substance use disorders, ethics, multicultural/diversity aspects and the impact of addiction on families and society. You will learn about counseling and psychotherapy-related processes and assessments for substance use disorders.
This course will provide an overview of substance use, dependency, and addiction as well as the effects of drugs and alcohol by addressing the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions of life. Participants will learn about the processes involved in substance use disorder counseling, assessment procedures, diagnostic interviewing, DSM-5 criteria, treatment techniques, and professional considerations. Models of substance use disorders, ethical considerations, and multicultural/diversity aspects including the impact of addiction on families and society will also be discussed.

This course will provide individuals with an overview of substance use disorder theories, both contemporary and historical. Individuals will gain knowledge in theories of counseling and an understanding of the potential for substance use disorders to mimic and/or co-occur with other mental health, medical, and neurological disorders. Individuals will learn counseling and psychotherapy related processes and assessment for dual diagnoses. Professional issues including boundary setting, counter-transference, and counseling related dynamics will be addressed. Counselor considerations and best practices will be reviewed and discussed for relapse prevention.

This course will provide individuals with an overview of evidence-based responses to substance use disorder from micro and macro level perspectives. Micro level responses include: 1) review of community resources available to the person living with substance use disorder and family, and 2) current evidence-based treatment approaches, including Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) and Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT). Macro level responses will include upstream factors in society that promote or inhibit access to evidence-based treatment to develop an awareness of policy issues and action toward advocacy.
