    Ralph M. Besse Library

The Ralph M. Besse Library seeks to provide intellectual nourishment for students, faculty, staff, and friends of the community.

    Ursuline college student in library6

Opened in 1985 and named for a trustee and cherished friend of the College, the Ralph M. Besse Library provides a welcoming space to learn, study, research, and collaborate.

An enormously successful businessman, Besse was also strong believer in the value of higher education. His fierce commitment to Ursuline College began in the early 1960s, when he helped raise the necessary funds to make Ursuline’s then-new Pepper Pike campus a reality, and it lasted through his many years on the college’s Board of Trustees, all the way up until his death 2002.

In countless ways, Besse’s essence is stamped into the very fabric of the library, but that is far from the only thing that makes Ursuline’s library unique.

Thank you Dr. Long for using the library to hold your study sessions.

Arriving in Ithaca, I did what other college students do who are broke. I tried to get a job as a waitress. Luckily for my photographic future, the waitress jobs were all taken. By the time I got to the student library to apply for a tempting forty-cents-an-hour job there, that was snapped up too. I wept some secret tears, and turned to my camera.

In this “land of the free” we are burned, tortured, and denied a fair trial, murdered for any imaginary wrong conceived in the brain of the negro-hating white man. There is no redress for us from a government which promised to protect all under its flag. It seems a mystery to me. They say, “One flag, one nation, one country indivisible.” Is this true? Can we say this truthfully, when one race is allowed to burn, hang, and inflict the most horrible torture weekly, monthly, on another?
