    English

You have so many more opportunities from an English degree than even I ever thought possible.

    Ashley Serraglio

    What made you choose Ursuline?

It wasn't my choice at first, it was my mom's, but in the end the smaller size and the care from professors for their students won me over. And the balcony in the library, I fell in love the second I saw it.

What did you like best about the English major?

Aside from the friends that I made in those classes, I would say that Creative Writing, World Mythology, and the History of the English Language were my favorite classes. Those were such amazing experiences and were the ones that I genuinely learned from and that challenged me academically.

Did Ursuline prepare you well for grad school?

I was accepted into the University of Southern Mississippi for an MLIS (Master of Library and Information Science) and a Certification for Archives and Special Collections. Making the decision to apply to grad school was mainly the result of my amazing work-study opportunity in the Ursuline library that led to a staff position there that I still hold, as well as the advice and guidance of (English Department Chair) Dr. Trostel, my advisor. Without those, I wouldn't have tried for grad school, much less my career choice in librarianship and archival.

What would you say to someone considering English at Ursuline?

I would say that you have so many more options than teaching, because everyone assumes if you're doing English, you're going to be a teacher. You have so many more opportunities from an English degree than even I ever thought possible.
