Why I chose Ursuline.
I chose Ursuline because of its proximity to home, and the choice of pursing the rare Historic Preservation degree. Very few schools offer a bachelor's in my major, and the inclusion of a bridge into the master’s program sealed the deal. Additionally, Ursuline's small class sizes, the friendly atmosphere, and the generous accessibility of many of my professors have made for an enriching academic journey.
Putting My Ursuline Degree to Work
During my time at Ursuline, I have provided consultation for and been involved with exhibit, interpretation, and archiving projects with several institutions. I was a member of the “Designing Ursuline” exhibit team, and I have completed internships with the Unionville Tavern Preservation Society, USS Cod Submarine Memorial, Cleveland Grays Armory, and the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland. In the summer of 2018, I was an intern with the Architecture Department at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, where I explored Washington’s financial papers and other primary sources, gathering nearly 1,000 references to his acquisition of building materials from 1759 to 1799. My findings were entered into a research database and can be correlated to Washington’s several building campaigns when he made additions to his home. This project will improve the efficiency of identifying original materials in different time periods at Mount Vernon and enhance the understanding of the mansion’s evolution overtime. It has been an honor to be a part of so many incredible projects this early in my career. I seek to continue my growth through the completion of my M.A. in Historic Preservation which will enable me to further diversify my work in the field.
I’m Making My World More Engaged
My master’s thesis involves the use of YouTube and social media for historic preservation education and advocacy. As part of this project, I have started a YouTube channel called “Activity with Antiquity” through which I intend to engage a large audience and develop a community of preservation professionals and enthusiasts who love learning and interacting with one another in an online space. I hope to make my career in historic preservation education through content creation, consulting, and other exciting ventures.
