Master of Arts in Counseling and Art Therapy Internships

    Clinical Experience

The Counseling and Art Therapy program provides a comprehensive practicum and internship program designed to help you gain practical experience in a variety of settings with different populations. You'll complete over 800 hours of service. Clinical hours are completed in four segments over one and a half to two years. You'll first complete a five-hour volunteer experience paired with an intensive microskills training component in Clinical I, followed by a 100-hour practicum in Clinical II. You'll then complete two 350-hour internships that may be spread over two or more semesters for a total of 700 internship hours.

    Placements

The Ursuline program has access to the wide range of hospital and community-based settings in Greater Cleveland and the surrounding area, with over 200 possible sites available to you, including:

    • Bellefaire Jewish Children's Bureau
    • Centers for Families and Children
    • Julie Billiart School
    • Kendal of Oberlin
    • Signature Health
    • The Cleveland Clinic
    • Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital
    • University Hospitals

You'll be provided with a listing of placement options and encouraged to make site visits to different settings where you'll meet counselors and art therapists and learn about their roles in each particular work setting. Settings include, but are not limited to,community mental health centers, residential treatment centers, hospitals, and schools. New sites are being added all the time, and prospective site supervisors may contact the Clinical Coordinator for information about becoming a placement site.

    Supervision

Site supervisors must be licensed professional clinical counselors, other independently licensed mental health professionals, and/or registered art therapists. Different segments of clinicals and internships require different levels of supervision. Weekly classroom supervision is provided by professional clinical supervising counselors (LPCC-S) and board certified art therapists (ATR-BC). Individual and small-group seminars accompany individual and/or triadic supervision on site. Supervisors will work closely with you to aid you in your professional development.

To learn more about the clinical program, email Clinical Coordinator Areka Foster or call her at 440.484.7021.
