Home / Student Life / COVID Kindness
Ursuline faculty, staff and students have responded to the needs of others in countless ways - most of them unseen - since the COVID-19 pandemic hit Greater Cleveland. Here, we've assembled a few images attesting to these acts of kindness.
When Ursuline switched to online instruction on March 18, 2020, students no longer needed the stores of gloves, masks, face shields and isolation gowns used in science labs and in the Fred A. Lennon Charitable Trust Nursing Skills Lab. Faculty members in the Biology and Chemistry departments as well as the Breen School of Nursing donated boxes of such personal protective equipment (PPE) to grateful colleagues at University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center and Cleveland Clinic’s Hillcrest Hospitals.
In a message to nursing faculty, Dean Patricia Sharpnack wrote, “I want us to remember that we are part of a profession where the majority of our colleagues are unable to socially isolate and must put themselves directly in harm’s way.”
Up next came letters of encouragement from nursing students; and a steady stream of meals, snacks, desserts and care packages made possible by donations from on and off campus to help keep morale up and let health care workers know that they are the true superheroes!
Dr Lisa Kuhen, Ursuline graduate and assistant professor in the Graduate Nursing program, embodies servant leadership. She works as a nurse practitioner in a busy pulmonary practice, teaches nursing grad students, and in between, has made and donated well over 100 colorful masks, some for Cleveland Clinic pediatric nurses, lots for people just asking for masks. “Lisa is what makes Ursuline Nurses shine,” said Janet Baker, associate dean for graduate nursing.
Fashion Department Chair Dr. Constance Korosec donated her talents as well, making cloth masks for staff members in Ursuline’s Facilities Department, who continue to work shifts keeping the campus safe and enabling essential business to continue.
